Should You Pull The Arms In The Downswing?
We ALL know you need to get your hands to go really fast in the downswing to produce a lot of clubhead speed. But, how and when you use the arms is critical if you want to play good golf.

    In my humble opinion , this is one of your less accurate videos from a biomechanics perspective. A bowed lead wrist (moving into increased ulnar deviation) approaching impact tends to open the clubface relative to the ball-target line . Therefore DJ and Colin would probably need to supinate their lead forearm more with a bowed wrist vs no bowing. I've never heard that the golf clubhead is designed to close automatically when being swung on the functional swing plane. If you look at AMM 3D graphs of wrist movements for 65+ best golfers in the world (google search for Jon Sinclair wrist graphs) , they are supinating their lead forearm/wrist to square the clubface by impact, so clubface squaring is not automatic. However there is a way to square the clubface and minimise musculature lead forearm supination using a passive club squaring torque (please read Dr Sasho MacKenzie's research article or his web article when he was playing one-armed golf because of a serious injury to one of his arms ). But that involved a disparity in the hand path relative to the instantaneous club swing plane in the early downswing and again too complicated to mention in my you-tube comment.

    @MyGolfDNA - Hi Chris, When I perform the drill with the club in my hands, the club face appears to be closed about 20 degrees through the impact zone. I assume this because I am using the exaggerated forward-rolled wrist position from the 300/300 drills I've been doing these past 3-4 days... and that I am currently over-cooking this? I appreciate it! 🤟

    • @MyGolfDNA
      @MyGolfDNA 3 дні тому

      Your grip is probably on the strong side so that’s why it looks shut as much as it does. Instead of the lead wrist pointing directly down the target line, it will be pointed a little more in front of than down the line. I would hit some small shots first though as some times you have to take the exaggerated route to learn new movements and the golf ball being present will certainly tell you if you still have it much too shut or not.

    So if these set of movements are new to someone. And you begin to nail the positions at speed, but the ball flight is left or right. are we looking at grip strength to straighten things out or manipulating the club face during these movements? Asking for a friend.

    • @MyGolfDNA
      @MyGolfDNA 3 дні тому

      I’d be looking at the grip and how the wrists are being used in the swing for sure. I’d also be looking in the hitting area to see when the release is starting and is the student creating some sort of high rate of closure in the face which is the most common thing we deal with daily.

    Another great video Chris. So this shoulder movement happens at the same time the belt buckle goes below the line from Sequencing The Golf Swing Made Easy (Part 2) | Downswing Power Move? These lessons really link together well. Thanks again.

    • @MyGolfDNA
      @MyGolfDNA 3 дні тому

      Thank you! Since the golf swing is dynamic and the weight shift is (planting of the foot) happening first and as soon as you feel the pressure hit the lead foot to 80%, the left shoulder arm function should commence. Think pressure down, shoulder down. Hope that makes sense.

    • @rgsochin3432
      @rgsochin3432 3 дні тому

      @@MyGolfDNAgot it I think...time it with the transfer to the foot but that will more or less be the same time as the belt drops below the line? I think in Rick Shiels recent video where he plays Justin Rose, Justin talks of this movement at the 46 minute mark as he explains to Rick his bad habit of pulling on his arm and coming over the top.

    • @MyGolfDNA
      @MyGolfDNA 3 дні тому

      @@rgsochin3432 During the initial shift to the lead side when the belt is dropping down, the backswing is still coming to completion (shoulders are finishing the turn and the arms are still working into the vertical plane). So you want to think about completing the transition before the shoulder/arm move commences. At speed, it will "feel" like its happening together. Good way to check is work the drill and get to fluidity, look at it from down the line and see where the lead arm is when the weight gets to the lead side and the hips are square. If the arms are way below parallel to the ground (p5), then you did the arm/shoulder move too early in the sequence. Note, in the drill, the arm will have dropped below P5 when you're in step 2 for obvious reasons. Let me know if you need further help on this and I'll gladly help out as I know a lot of others will have the same question(s).

    Liked the video. Why though isn't the top of the club shaft point towards your left hip or doesn't that matter?

    Semi confused on what is supposed to happen from p4 to p6 with the arms/wrists. My left arm has to move BACK to get into this position (to my lead side instead of in front of me).

    Formerly low single digit, but I've really lost it and ball striking with irons has gone to ****. I'm going to focus on your positions and see if this video can get me back on track. You've got beautiful tempo by the way, and everything looks so fluid and unforced. Liked and subbed.

    Just as with every other youtube teacher talking about lag, it never includes where the wrist angle at thigh high is released thru the impact area. Some show the trail wrist still in the set position thru impact along with shaft lean to compress the ball while what I'm seeing from you is that the angle is released & is flat at impact or am I mistaken in what I'm seeing? That's my issue with holding lag. Where is it released because I find it difficult to time correctly. It obviously happens quickly so I don't know if you can be that exact. When I watch Scheffler play, he doesn't look like he has much wrist set at the top of his swing much like Steve Stricker. It just seems simpler that way & should be much more repeatable. I haven't tried it yet so it remains to be seen.

      Lag is NOT something I want you to hold when you’re in fluidity. Ever. Showing a consistent position at delivery and at impact for what the wrists need to look like, in order to deliver the club properly is not a great idea simply from the massive amounts of variance we see in the grip. I want students to learn how to support the club in sequence and to get rid of the support at the right time. We don’t want to produce sharp angles that are hard to manage and rely on timing. We want to push students to feel and see something different (albeit exaggerated) and then put movement and athleticism to it as quickly as possible to see if it sticks with the student like we want it to. Everyone responds differently and part of being an instructor is to understand that and then help the student figure out a solution to the problem. I don’t like being grouped in with “every other instructor” so I’d love to have you come over to the website and lll do a free virtual lesson for you to help you understand what’s best for you. Let me know if you’re interested and I’ll make it happen Mike.

    Chris - Terrific video. I limit the golf voices/videos to a select few (less than 5) instructors. You just jumped into that small list. I often seek and inquire some details on the sequence of how my body needs to move and I've yet to come across anyone who can break it down simply, until now. I try to keep things simple but still find frustration. I'm working on these moves daily and you're right, that side oblique is speaking to me. I'm considering jumping into your membership but for now I'd like to sample some more of your YT content. Thank you sir! 🤟

      Thank you for the kind words! Remember, you can come sign up, go through the consult with me where I sit down with you live and go through the swings and your entire plan before you start your journey. Our members LOVE this part of the process as it’s very much needed. If you don’t like the plan or you have any doubts, I’ll refund everything back to you. I dont want to be misleading or create an environment like so many do, and tell you it’s going to be easy to fix. We need to look at the entire picture and layout your plan and then dial in the plan as you move forward. Let me know if you have any questions at all and take your time and absorb as much as you can. I’ll be here when you’re ready:)

      @@MyGolfDNA Chris - Thank you for that response! Started repetitions from this video today (300/300). I love and learn best through repetition, particularly low and slow. It is exactly how I train/mento in my industry, ironically. We will be syncing up quite soon, I feel. What this video presents is very straight forward yet so vital because it is all in the strike zone. Nobody has presented this to me in this fashion, yet (wow) it is imperative to learn the most important aspects in this fashion. Thank you sir! 🤟

      @@MyGolfDNA I'm an amateur videographer, maybe a pro here can help, I would use a led panel system combined with a soft box to give enough light and color without be overexposed. Look forward to more vids. Keep it up!
